In 1939 Ota presented under the somewhat cryptic title of "Nevus fusco-caeruleus ophthalmomaxillaris" an syndrome consisting of grayish-blue, macular discoloration affecting the sclera of an eye and the ipsilateral facial skin in the area of distribution of the corresponding trigeminal nerve. Ota¡¯a nevus is usually a unilateral, non hairy, macular, but slightly raised, discoloration of the face.
Ota¡¯s nevus has been reported most often in Orientals, though other races may also be affected. And Ota¡¯s nevus was one of the disease which was formed frequently in plastic and reconstructive surgery patients in Korea.
Various attempts to treat Ota¡¯s nevus were practiced, but they have been uniformly unsuccessful. So Ota¡¯s nevus was reviewed, which was treated with excision, cryosurgery (dry ice), dermabrasion skin graft and CO©üLASER surgery from March 1975 to February, 1984 at Kyung Hee University hospital.
The conclusions are as follows;
1. With the above methods, complete treatment without scar formation and pigmentation was impossible.
2. LASER surgery was the single method which revealed relatively high satisfactory rate(71%).
3. By combined treatment with LASER and cryosugery increased satisfactory rate (75%).
